CURRENT PROJECTS

We are currently focusing on increasing the amount of sterilizations in Oaxaca.

We are working on three types of projects with our partners: free or lower cost sterilization campaigns, trapping and sterilizing more street dogs and cats, and responding to immediate needs where some food, medicine and good dialogue results in healthier, sterilized animals and trust in the community.

Sterilization Campaigns

We fund and work with organizations who hold sterilization campaigns. People bring their animals to these advertised campaigns but some cannot afford the low cost of approximately $15 per animal, can’t get time off from work or don’t have transportation to the site. Many people volunteer their time to keep costs low and often there are more than 100 animals that get sterilized at a campaign. We’ve learned from our partners that many don’t bring their animals because they cannot afford the cost or they may bring one or two and have others at home. They then have puppies or kittens they cannot afford and these animals are frequently dumped in streets, rivers and fields. This is why we are working with our partners to hold free sterilization campaigns.

STREET DOGS AND CATS PROJECT: TRAP, STERILIZE, RELEASE

The sterilization campaigns primarily address pets and occasionally people bring in street animals. Sterilizing street animals is more costly and has many challenges. For cats, they are ofter captured in traps and brought to a vet or a campaign. Dogs can sometimes be captured but sometimes to address large numbers of dogs, a street dog project is held where dogs are darted with anesthesia. Darting dogs requires an individual to spend days or weeks getting the dogs accustomed to a feeding schedule and location so they are present the morning of the darting. The dogs need to be followed and monitored until the anesthesia takes effect and they can be transported to the surgery location.

RAPID RESPONSE FUND

There are situations where a person contacts one of our partners requesting help with their pets or where there are animals in need of immediate attention. It requires a person to deploy to the site, often with offerings of pet food and general assistance. These are time-consuming visits but often very rewarding by getting those animals in better health and sterilized. This provides and opportunity for education and trust building within a community.
